Why the cat chases the mouse
昔 々 、 人間 も 生まれていない 、 大昔 の ある 年 の 暮れ の 事 です 。
A long time ago, when humans still hadn’t been born, and the year was growing old.。
神様 が 、 動物 達 に 言いました 。
God said to all the animals,。
「 もう 直ぐ 正月 だ 。 元旦 に は 、 皆 私 の 所 に 来なさい 。
“The year will soon end, on new years come to my house everyone.
そして 、 先 に 来た 物 から 十 二 番目 迄 を 、 その 年 の 大将 と しよう 」
And I will make each of the first twelve to arrive a leader of a year.”
ところが 、 うっかり もの の 猫 は 集まる 日 を 忘れた ので 、 友達 の 鼠 に 聞きました 。
However, the bumbling cat forgot when they were to go. So he asked the mouse.
すると 鼠 は 、
The mouse said,
「 ああ 、 新年 の 二 日 だ よ 」
“Why, It’s January 2nd.”
と 、 態と 嘘 を 教えました 。
with a grin he told the lie.
さて 、 元旦 に 成りました 。
So January first came.
牛 は 足 が 遅い ので 、 朝 早く に 家 を 出ました 。
Because the cow walks slow, he left home early in the morning.
ちゃっかり もの の 鼠 は 、 こっそり 牛 の 背中 に 乗って 神様 の 前 に 来る と 、
The shrewd mouse rode on a back of the cow in secret, and when they arrived at God’s place,。
ピョン と 飛び下りて 一番 さいしょ に 神様 の 前 に 行きました 。。
he jumped off from the cow and got to God first.
それで 鼠 が さいしょ の 年 の 大将 に 為り 、 牛 が 二 番目 に 為りました 。
That’s why the mouse became a leader of the first year and the cow became second.
その後 、 虎 ・ 兎 ・ 竜 ・ 蛇 ・ 馬 ・ 羊 ・ 猿 ・ 鶏 ・ 犬 ・ 猪 の 順 に 為りました 。
After that, the order became the tiger, the hare, the dragon, the snake, the horse, the sheep, the monkey, the chicken, the dog, and the boar.
ところが 猫 は 、 鼠 に 教えられた とおり二 日 に 神様 の 所 へ 行きました 。
But the cat went to the God’s on 2nd as the mouse had told him.
すると 神様 は 、 「 遅かった ね 。 残念 だ けど 、 昨日 決まった よ 」 と 、 いう で は ありません か 。
God looked at him and said.“My, you’re late. It’s a pity but it was decided yesterday.”
悔しい の なん の 。
How frustrating for the cat.
「 鼠 め 、 善くも 騙ました な ！ 」
“How dare the mouse cheat me!”
怒った 猫 は 、 それから ずっと 、 鼠 を 見る と 追いかける よう に 為りました 。
Since then, whenever an angry cat sees a mouse he runs after him.
