昔むかし 々 、 人間にんげん も 生うまれていない 、 大昔おおむかし の ある 年とし の 暮くれ の 事こと です 。

A long time ago, when humans still hadn’t been born, and the year was growing old.。

神様かみさま が 、 動物どうぶつ 達たち に 言いいました 。

God said to all the animals,。

「 もう 直すぐ 正月しょうがつ だ 。 元旦がんたん に は 、 皆みな 私わたし の 所ところ に 来きなさい 。

“The year will soon end, on new years come to my house everyone.

そして 、 先さき に 来きた 物もの から 十じゅう 二に 番目ばんめ 迄まで を 、 その 年とし の 大将たいしょう と しよう 」

And I will make each of the first twelve to arrive a leader of a year.”

ところが 、 うっかり もの の 猫ねこ は 集あつまる 日ひ を 忘わすれた ので 、 友達ともだち の 鼠ねずみ に 聞ききました 。

すると 鼠ねずみ は 、

The mouse said,

「 ああ 、 新年しんねん の 二ふつ 日か だ よ 」

ピョン と 飛び下とびおりて 一番いちばん さいしょ に 神様かみさま の 前まえ に 行いきました 。。

he jumped off from the cow and got to God first.

それで 鼠ねずみ が さいしょ の 年とし の 大将たいしょう に 為なり 、 牛うし が 二に 番目ばんめ に 為なりました 。

That’s why the mouse became a leader of the first year and the cow became second.

その後ご 、 虎とら ・ 兎うさぎ ・ 竜りゅう ・ 蛇へび ・ 馬うま ・ 羊ひつじ ・ 猿さる ・ 鶏にわとり ・ 犬いぬ ・ 猪いのしし の 順じゅん に 為なりました 。

After that, the order became the tiger, the hare, the dragon, the snake, the horse, the sheep, the monkey, the chicken, the dog, and the boar.

ところが 猫ねこ は 、 鼠ねずみ に 教おしえられた とおり二ふつ 日か に 神様かみさま の 所ところ へ 行いきました 。

But the cat went to the God’s on 2nd as the mouse had told him.

すると 神様かみさま は 、 「 遅おそかった ね 。 残念ざんねん だ けど 、 昨日きのう 決きまった よ 」 と 、 いう で は ありません か 。

God looked at him and said.“My, you’re late. It’s a pity but it was decided yesterday.”

悔くやしい の なん の 。

How frustrating for the cat.

「 鼠ねずみ め 、 善よくも 騙かたました な ！ 」

“How dare the mouse cheat me!”

怒おこった 猫ねこ は 、 それから ずっと 、 鼠ねずみ を 見みる と 追おいかける よう に 為なりました 。

Since then, whenever an angry cat sees a mouse he runs after him.
